Bastion Saint-Laurent

The Bastion Saint-Laurent is a fortified structure in Lyon built in the 16th century with thick stone walls and defensive features. The construction has retained its original exterior form and was recently renovated to include contemporary facilities.

The fortification was constructed in the early 1500s and formed part of a major defensive line encircling Lyon. It later transitioned through different uses including religious and military quarters.

The structure reflects Lyon's complex past through its changing roles across different eras and communities. Its preserved walls tell the story of how the city evolved and adapted over time.

The site is located on the slopes of Croix-Rousse near the Rhone River and is relatively accessible. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the terrain is hilly with stairs needed for exploration.

In 1848 the site became the scene of a workers' uprising when insurgents seized control of the structure. The intense fighting that followed remains a significant moment in the area's past.
