Hôpital militaire Villemanzy is a former military hospital built on the Croix-Rousse slopes featuring 18th-century classical architecture with stone facades and registered fountains. The site now houses an international student residence and dining facilities that continue to use the historic structures.
Built in 1859 within a former convent building, it served soldiers through the Italian campaign and both World Wars before closing in 1945. Its medical role was central to shaping how French military health services evolved.
The building carries the name of General Jacques Pierre Orillard de Villemanzy, who contributed to the development of French military health services.
The site is accessible via Montée Saint-Sébastien in the first arrondissement, where the current student residence is located. The terraced gardens provide views across Lyon and are sometimes open to the public, especially during events or through arranged visits.
The terraced gardens of the former hospital provide views over Lyon and now house a restaurant in the former chief physician's residence.
