Parc Buffon

Parc Buffon is a castle with attached parkland in Montbard that spreads across multiple terraces and houses various garden types. The complex features French and English gardens, medieval areas, botanical collections, and working gardens, all organically integrated into the landscape.

The site originated as a fortress in the 10th century. In the 18th century, Georges-Louis Leclerc transformed the medieval structure into a residential castle and scientific center.

The park was the workplace of naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, who conducted his groundbreaking studies on nature here. His writing room and research spaces remain visible today, telling the story of his scientific passion.

The park is accessible year-round, with guided building tours offered during warmer months. It is worth allowing time for walking through the various garden areas, as the site offers substantial grounds to explore.

An old library in the Saint-Louis tower preserves books and documents from Leclerc's time, offering insight into his scholarly interests. This space was once the hub of his intellectual work and allows visitors to trace his learned activities directly.
