Grottes d'Azé, Show cave in Azé, France

Grottes d'Azé comprises two cave sections within a limestone massif, featuring stalactites, stalagmites, and an underground river that cuts through rock formations. The system reveals multiple chambers where geological processes have sculpted the stone over thousands of years.

Archaeological excavations have revealed that the cave ranks among the oldest human settlements in the Saône-et-Loire region. Tools and objects discovered here document a lengthy occupation spanning back thousands of years into prehistory.

The cave has been a refuge for humans and animals across millennia, and this shared history remains woven into its character. Walking through the passages, visitors sense the continuity of life that has depended on these spaces since prehistoric times.

The cave welcomes visitors year-round with guided tours offered in multiple languages and parking available near the entrance. Comfortable footwear is advisable since the internal paths are uneven and the temperature remains consistently cool inside.

The cave system harbors rare jellyfish-shaped rock formations and cave pearls that are uncommonly seen elsewhere. These geological formations developed under very specific conditions that make the site particularly noteworthy for those interested in mineralogy.
