Maison cantonale de La Bastide

The Maison cantonale de La Bastide is a multi-story administrative building in Bordeaux that displays geometric patterns and ornamental sculptures across its exterior. The structure integrates various architectural approaches with differently shaped windows and contrasting materials throughout its design.

Designed in 1913 to address the shortage of public facilities in the district, construction was delayed until 1925 due to World War I. This interruption influenced how the final design combined multiple architectural styles.

The terracotta friezes by Gentil & Bourdet and sculptures by Edmond Tuffet decorate the interior spaces, showcasing the artistic craftsmanship of the early 20th century. These works reflect how local artists contributed to the district's modernization.

The building sits at the corner of Château Neuf and Nuits streets and continues to serve as an administrative center. Visitors can view the exterior design from the street and examine the architectural details from outside.

The building blends Neo-Gothic, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco styles in an unexpected mixture that mirrors the architectural transition between periods. This fusion of different eras is uncommon and reflects how the construction delay shaped the artistic evolution.
