Musée du Scaphandre

Musée du Scaphandre is a diving museum in Espalion that displays a large collection of historical suits, breathing apparatus, and underwater exploration equipment. The exhibits include recompression chambers, small submarines, regulators, and various equipment models from different eras.

Two local engineers named Rouquayrol and Denayrouze created the first modern self-contained breathing apparatus in 1864. This invention greatly influenced how people imagined underwater exploration and inspired writers of that era.

The building itself is a converted Gothic church, showing how this town chose to honor its engineering heritage through such an unconventional space. Visitors can trace how diving technology captured the imagination of writers and adventurers of the time.

The museum has several exhibition rooms that are easy to navigate and provide a good overview of the collection at your own pace. Plan enough time to examine the objects closely, especially if you are interested in the technical details of the equipment.

The museum preserves the original Rouquayrol-Denayrouze apparatus that was tested in the nearby Lot River. This historical equipment shows the actual foundation of modern diving gear that is used today.
