Pont-Vieux d'Espalion

The Pont-Vieux d'Espalion is a stone bridge crossing the Lot River with four arches made of red granite sandstone in Gothic style. The arches vary in size, reflecting how the structure was built and modified over time.

This structure was built in the 13th century and originally included three defensive towers and a drawbridge for protection. These military features were removed during renovations carried out in the 18th century.

This crossing has served pilgrims walking toward Santiago de Compostela for centuries, making it an important waypoint on a major spiritual route. The local community still recognizes its role in connecting travelers from different regions.

The bridge welcomes both pedestrians and cyclists and connects both sides of town easily. Watch your footing on the stone surface and note the raised edges if you are bringing a bicycle.

The central arch rises higher than its neighbors to handle the river's rapid floods during heavy rains. An iron cross placed in 1728 marks the southeast side and stands as a historical marker from that era.
