Pont des Trois-Continents, Cable-stayed bridge in Nantes, France.
The Pont des Trois-Continents is a cable-stayed bridge spanning 273 meters across the Loire River, connecting the Isle of Nantes to the southern district of Rezé. The structure is divided into three sections and allows ship traffic to pass beneath its support cables.
Construction began in the early 1990s and the bridge opened in 1995 as part of efforts to reconnect the Isle of Nantes with the rest of the city. It was built during a major redevelopment period when the former port island was being transformed into a modern neighborhood.
The name references Nantes' role as a historic port city with global connections through maritime trade. Walking across, you can sense the reminder of how this place once linked people and goods between distant parts of the world.
A separate path for pedestrians and cyclists runs alongside vehicle traffic, making it easy to cross safely on foot or by bike. The bridge has accessible ramps at both ends for wheelchairs and strollers.
The bridge features asymmetrical cable-stayed pylons that create a distinctive visual profile when crossed. This design choice allowed engineers to keep the structure low while still allowing ships to pass underneath without obstruction.
