Place du Ralliement

Place du Ralliement is a large open square in the center of Angers with a rectangular layout and spacious grounds. The Grand Theatre dominates the surroundings, while paved areas and pedestrian zones create a welcoming public gathering space.

The square received its current name in 1791 as a symbol of a new era following the French Revolution. It underwent major reconstruction after two large fires in the second half of the 1800s, which cleared away narrow streets and old structures.

The Grand Theatre on the square hosts regular performances that draw people from across the region for music, theater, and dance. The building and its events make this place a gathering spot where locals and visitors experience the performing arts together.

The square is designed for pedestrians with plenty of space to walk and rest. Underground parking is available beneath the square, and the modern tram system provides easy connections to other parts of the city.

The site was once covered by cemeteries and narrow streets before it became an open plaza. This transformation shows how cities can reinvent themselves after disasters, creating entirely new public spaces from what was there before.
