Thermes des Lutteurs

Thermes des Lutteurs is a Roman bathing complex in Saint-Romain-en-Gal covering roughly 3,500 square meters of excavated remains. The site centers on a large rectangular pool measuring about 37 meters long, enclosed by a semicircular gallery with additional chambers for different bathing functions.

Construction began around 65 CE during the first century of Roman occupation. Significant modifications occurred in the second century, and the facility was eventually abandoned during the third century as the region's Roman settlement declined.

Wall paintings in the latrines show athletes, wrestlers, and boxers in action, revealing what Romans valued in their leisure time. These images offer a window into how important sports and physical competition were to the people who gathered here.

The site is open for guided tours that help visitors navigate the ancient structures and understand the layout. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven and some areas remain exposed to the elements.

The bathhouse sits on the right bank of the Rhône, revealing that the Gallo-Roman city of Vienne once spread across both sides of the river. This location hints at a much larger ancient settlement than was long supposed.
