Théâtre du Gymnase, Historical theatre near La Canebière, Marseille, France
The Théâtre du Gymnase contains 695 seats and features an Italian-style architecture with characteristic balconies and interior decorations near the city center.
Originally established as a chapel of the Lyonnaises Convent, the theatre opened its doors in 1804 under the name Théâtre Français before becoming municipal property in 1983.
The theatre participates in the regional performing arts through partnerships with La Criée, La Friche La Belle de Mai, L'Odéon-Opéra, and Le Zef venues.
The building remains closed until September 2026 due to structural concerns regarding the balconies, identified during a technical inspection in September 2021.
Under the direction of Dominique Bluzet since 1993, the theatre maintains its program by organizing performances across different partner venues during renovations.
