Château d'Hauterive

Château d'Hauterive is a castle near Issoire set on elevated ground with terraced gardens, vegetable beds, and seven hectares of woodland and walking paths. The estate also includes a wine cellar, ice house, bread ovens, and a press room along with other period rooms and spaces.

Construction began in 1780 but incorporated older structures, including a chapel bell from 1653 that still stands. This blending of old and new elements shows how the estate was built on earlier foundations.

The castle reflects how French noble families lived through its rooms, gardens, and practical buildings for storing and processing food. The arrangement of these areas shows how the estate and household were interconnected.

To see the different rooms and areas, visitors need to arrange an appointment in advance. Comfortable walking shoes are useful since you will be exploring across the extensive grounds and paths.

The estate preserves a working glaciere, a specialized ice house from the 18th century that shows how ice was stored for summer supplies. This rare facility reveals the sophistication involved in running a large property.
