Lac du Rizzanese, reservoir in France
Lac du Rizzanese is a reservoir in Corsica created by a concrete dam across the Rizzanese river at about 530 meters elevation. The roughly 10-hectare body of water generates electricity and supplies water to local areas while surrounded by green hillsides and rocky slopes.
The dam was built in the late twentieth century to generate hydroelectric power and improve water supply to this part of Corsica. It came into operation in 2012 and has since become an important part of local infrastructure.
The reservoir takes its name from the Rizzanese river that it holds back. It represents how local people manage water and land together, blending practical needs with the natural landscape they depend on daily.
Access to the lake is via the D20 road and a smaller route to the dam, after which you walk to reach the water. The shores are steep in many places, but some flatter areas exist especially beyond the dam where you can safely approach the water.
The water is known for brown trout populations that average around 30 centimeters and display green and blue coloring with white-ringed spots. Fly-fishing is effective here because fish feed actively at the surface during insect hatches rather than hunting smaller fish.
