Fontaine du Roi René, Stone fountain and statue in Cours Mirabeau, Aix-en-Provence, France
The Fontaine du Roi René features a circular basin with a white marble pedestal displaying four faces adorned with medallions and inscriptions about King René.
Inaugurated in 1823, the fountain replaced an earlier pyramidal structure that was destroyed during the French Revolution and required water diversion from Carmelite Fountain.
The statue depicts King René holding muscat grapes and a dolphin-adorned scepter, representing the agricultural development he brought to the Provence region.
The fountain stands at the upper section of Cours Mirabeau, connecting the Mazarin district to the old commercial area of Aix-en-Provence.
The entire structure weighs 6.6 tons and required a month-long journey from Paris to Aix-en-Provence on a specialized transportation platform.
