King Clotaire III confirmed the foundation of this monastery by monk Frobert in 657, dedicating it to Saint Peter and establishing its initial religious community.
During the 12th century, the abbey maintained a notable scriptorium where monks produced manuscripts and illuminations, contributing to religious education and literature.
The abbey grounds now share space with a medical clinic, with archaeological excavations revealing multiple construction phases through different time periods.
The monastery changed its name to Montier-la-Celle in 1332, after being known as Vetus Cella and Sancti Bobini Cella in previous centuries.
