Abbaye de Montier-la-Celle

The Abbaye de Montier-la-Celle is a Benedictine monastery located near the Vienne River on former wetland. The remaining structures display religious architecture spanning several periods, uncovered through archaeological work on the site.

King Clotaire III confirmed the foundation of the monastery by monk Frobert in 657, dedicating it to Saint Peter. Over the following centuries, the site developed into an important religious center in the region.

The place served as a center for manuscript production in the Middle Ages, where monks created decorated religious texts by hand. This work was vital for spreading knowledge and spiritual writings throughout the region.

The site now shares space with a medical clinic, which may affect visitor access to different areas. It is wise to check ahead about which parts are open to the public.

The monastery went through several name changes, originally known as Vetus Cella and later as Sancti Bobini Cella. The name Montier-la-Celle was officially adopted in 1332 and has remained ever since.
