Citadelle de Valenciennes, Citadel in Valenciennes, France

The Citadelle de Valenciennes is a former military fortress in Valenciennes, in northern France, of which a partial section of the city-side front remains, including two bastions and a demi-lune. The site is listed as a Monument historique, placing it under official heritage protection.

The fortress was first built between 1570 and 1573 under the Duke of Alba, then reinforced in the 17th century after the French army took the city, with Vauban overseeing improvements to its defenses. Most of the structure was demolished in the late 19th century, and the site was officially decommissioned in 1889.

During the European Heritage Days, guided tours are organized at the site, giving visitors a clearer sense of how the old fortifications once worked together. Walking among the remaining bastions and walls, you can trace the outline of a classic 17th-century defensive layout.

The site is outdoors, so checking the weather before visiting is a good idea, especially since conditions can change quickly in this part of northern France. A parking lot called Lacuzon on Rue de Roubaix is nearby and makes arriving by car straightforward.

The site also includes the lock known as the Ecluse des Repenties, an old water control structure that was once used for both defense and water management at the same time. This combination of military and hydraulic functions in a single structure is something most visitors do not expect to find here.
