Château de la Marthonye

Château de la Marthonye is a historical castle in Saint-Jean-de-Côle featuring a rectangular main building with two square corner towers and a round tower containing a monumental staircase from the 17th century. The complex brings together structures from different periods in a single composition.

The castle originated in the 13th century but suffered damage during the Hundred Years War before being rebuilt in the late 15th century by Étienne de La Marthonie. Later additions from the 17th century reflect how the style evolved following these reconstruction efforts.

The building displays the architectural style typical of noble Périgord residences, blending living spaces with defensive features. Visitors can observe these design choices reflected in the rooms and structural elements they encounter throughout.

Access to the castle requires advance planning since it is not open daily. Visitors should wear suitable footwear as uneven floors and stairs are present throughout the interior.

The castle connects its older buildings through a remarkable ground-floor gallery with basket-handle arcades. This passage featured a straight-flight staircase from the early 17th century that showcases technical innovations of its era.
