Couvent Saint-Paul, Thiviers

The Couvent Saint-Paul is a neo-Romanesque building with a plain, dignified architectural character. The main entrance is marked by stone statuary, and the interior combines chapel spaces, residential areas for the sisters, and quiet courtyard and garden areas.

The convent was founded in 1870 and began as an orphanage and school for girls under the Sisters of the Sacred Heart. The building later served different purposes, including use as a military hospital during another period.

The convent is home to sisters who maintain a contemplative prayer life within its walls. The cloister courtyard and chapel spaces reflect the daily rhythm of religious community life that visitors can quietly observe.

The building is located in the town of Thiviers in the Dordogne region and is easiest to reach on foot from the town center. Visitors should be respectful and keep in mind that this is an active religious site where the sisters carry out their daily work.

After years of abandonment and various changes of purpose, the building was eventually restored to its original religious mission. Today it operates as a place of silence and prayer where the ongoing monastic tradition is lived out.
