Château de Renay, Medieval castle in Renay, France.
Château de Renay is a castle in Renay, France, featuring a distinctive circular tower from the 15th century on its northwest side. The tower connects to the main building to form a quadrilateral complex, expanded by two pavilions on the southern side.
The castle originated as part of a defense system along the Loir between the 12th and 15th centuries. The Renay family owned it continuously from the early 15th century into the 18th century, gradually converting it into a residence.
The castle takes its name from the family that shaped it from the 15th century onward. The buildings show a blend of medieval defensive elements mixed with later Renaissance details added over the centuries.
The exterior walls and roofing of the tower and 15th-century building have been protected as historical monuments since 1971. Visitors can explore the outside of the complex and observe the architectural changes that developed over the centuries.
The original domain of the castle stretched across a vast area and included several neighboring villages. These landholdings made the estate one of the more significant feudal properties in the region during the Middle Ages and Early Modern period.
