The castle stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Rhône Valley, featuring defensive walls and architectural elements from different construction periods.
Construction of the fortress began in the 11th century, with major expansions during the 12th to 14th centuries and modifications in the 17th century.
The castle belonged to the Raousset-Boulbon family from 1674, including Gaston de Raousset-Boulbon who founded the Republic of Sonora in Mexico.
Access to the castle remains restricted due to ongoing safety-related construction work and restoration projects managed by architect Dominique de Lavergne.
The castle features an advanced water supply system and contained thirty rooms across two floors in its 14th-century residential section.
