Frigolet Abbey, Medieval monastery in Tarascon, France
The Saint-Michel de Frigolet Abbey stands between Avignon and Tarascon, surrounded by pine forests and olive groves of the Montagnette hills.
Founded in 960 by Conrad I of Burgundy, the monastery changed religious orders multiple times before the Premonstratensians took ownership in 1923.
The complex includes two churches: the 12th-century Saint-Michel church and the Notre-Dame Basilica, featuring murals inspired by the Holy Chapel of Paris.
Guided tours in French take place on Sunday afternoons, with access to the churches and outdoor spaces available daily except during religious celebrations.
The abbey derives its name from ferigoulo, the Provençal word for thyme, which grows abundantly in the surrounding Mediterranean landscape.
