Pont suspendu de Bonneuil-Matours, pont suspendu à Bonneuil-Matours (Vienne)
The Pont suspendu de Bonneuil-Matours is a suspension bridge in the French town of Bonneuil-Matours. Steel cables stretched from tall towers support the road deck as it spans across the river below.
The bridge was built over a hundred years ago and shows engineering techniques from that era. It is the last suspension bridge of its kind in the Vienne department, as similar bridges in the region have disappeared or been replaced.
The bridge takes its name from the town it serves, Bonneuil-Matours. Visitors can see today how the metal cables and stone supports reflect the engineering knowledge of earlier times.
The bridge is open to cars and pedestrians and connects both sides of the river. It sits in a quiet area where you can see the surrounding landscape with trees and fields.
This is the last remaining suspension bridge of its kind in the Vienne department. While comparable structures in nearby towns like La Roche-Posay and Vicq-sur-Gartempe have long disappeared, this one has endured.
