Château Saint-Martial, Historical castle in Jarnac, France
This Renaissance castle features stone walls, ornate ceramic panels on its facade, and towers that rise above the Charente River landscape.
Built between 1882 and 1884 by architect Henri Parent for Maurice Laporte-Bisquit, the castle replaced an earlier house owned by the cognac merchant family.
The castle represents the prosperity of 19th-century cognac merchants, with architectural elements reflecting the status of the Bisquit family in French society.
Visitors can schedule guided tours by contacting the current owners at 06 03 51 52 31 or 06 64 67 74 54 to explore the castle's interior.
During World War I, the castle transformed into a military hospital managed by Solange Laporte-Bisquit to care for wounded soldiers.
