Gorges de la Langouette, Natural canyon in Jura Mountains, France.
Gorges de la Langouette is a canyon in the Jura Mountains that winds through limestone rock with dramatic depth and narrow passages. The river has carved vertical walls and a winding path that guides you through this natural gorge.
A mill and sawmill operated at the gorge entrance starting in 1871, but fire destroyed these buildings in 1959. This industrial past shows how people once harnessed the river's power in this location.
The Upper Saine Valley, encompassing the gorges, received national natural heritage status in September 2011 for its environmental significance.
The trail starts from a marked parking area along the route toward Foncine le Bas and is generally easy to walk. Wear sturdy footwear as the path includes wet sections and uneven stone surfaces near the water.
Giant potholes line the path, carved by thousands of years of river swirling and grinding away at the stone. A waterfall marks the end of the walk, creating a natural stopping point where the water plunges over the rock.
