Dent du Nivolet, Summit in Bauges Massif, France
Dent du Nivolet is a summit in the Bauges Massif with steep limestone faces that rise above the valley floor. The peak is crowned by a large metal cross and overlooks the city of Chambéry and the Lac du Bourget below.
The peak was crowned with a monumental cross in 1861 by local residents seeking to mark the site. The original wooden structure was replaced in 1910 with a steel construction that stands there still today.
The cross at the top has been a landmark for the region for more than 150 years, visible from many places in the valley. It shows how important this mountain is to the local identity and how it connects the people below to the peak.
The ascent follows marked trails starting from La Féclaz station, with shuttle services running during the warmer months. The route requires basic fitness and offers rest spots along the way with views over the valley.
Under certain conditions, visitors may observe the Brocken Spectre from the summit, a rare optical phenomenon that creates circular rainbow patterns in the surrounding mist. This effect occurs especially in early morning hours when light conditions align properly.
