Redoubt Kali, Russian military fort near Poti, Georgia.
Redoubt Kali was a Russian military fort on Georgia's Black Sea coast between the Tsiva and Khobistskali rivers. The structure occupied a strategic location that controlled access to this important maritime region.
Russian forces built this fort in the early 1800s to control the Black Sea coast. British troops captured it during the Crimean War in 1854, marking the end of Russian control at this location.
The 1847 engraving of a commander's landing at the fort provides detailed documentation of military practices and uniforms from nineteenth-century Georgia.
The site is difficult to access today because an oil terminal occupies the area as part of a working maritime facility. Visitors should check in advance whether touring the location is possible, as the zone may be restricted for safety reasons.
Authorities demolished the entire fort structure in 1907 and removed it from the coast. Nothing remained of the once-substantial military installation after this complete destruction.
