Lake Paliastomi

Lake Paliastomi is a coastal lagoon near Poti that stretches across a broad area and connects to the Black Sea through a natural channel. The shallow water is surrounded by wetland vegetation and attracts many bird species.

The lagoon formed through natural coastal processes over long periods, and archaeological finds show that the area has been used by people since ancient times. Artifacts from the old kingdom of Colchis have been recovered from both the shore and underwater locations.

Fishing communities around the lake practice techniques passed down over generations, shaping how people in the region make their living. These traditional methods remain visible in daily life along the shore and form part of the local identity.

The name comes from Greek and refers to the natural water opening to the sea, which served as a key trading point for thousands of years. This lagoon connected ancient Mediterranean commerce with routes inland to the Caucasus.
