Khobi Monastery

Khobi Monastery is an Orthodox monastery in Nojikhevi featuring a stone church with ornamental carvings, a bell tower with seven windows, and a white stone palace with arched openings. The complex functions today as an active nunnery where regular religious services take place.

This monastery was established in the 13th century and served as a dynastic abbey for the Dadiani family. It housed significant Christian relics, including what was believed to be the robe of the Virgin Mary.

The frescoes inside reflect a blend of Byzantine and Georgian religious artistic traditions from the medieval period. Visitors can observe how these influences shaped the visual character of the sacred spaces.

The monastery sits about 3 kilometers north of Khobi town and is straightforward to reach. As an active nunnery with regular services, visitors should be aware of opening times and approach with appropriate respect.

Archaeological digs beneath the monastery uncovered remains of a 4th-century cathedral and evidence of a Colchian settlement dating to the 8th century BCE. These findings reveal the site has held significance across more than two millennia.
