Tsaishi cathedral

The Tsaishi Cathedral exhibits traditional Georgian ecclesiastical architecture with a central dome and detailed stone carvings on its exterior walls.

The cathedral, constructed between the 6th and 7th centuries, served as an episcopal center and maintained a succession of twenty bishops from the 11th century until 1823.

The cathedral contains religious artifacts and centuries-old frescoes that demonstrate the development of Georgian Orthodox Christian art through different periods.

The cathedral remains an active religious center within the Zugdidi and Tsaishi diocese, conducting regular Orthodox services for the local community.

Following an earthquake in 1614, Bishop Malachi supervised the restoration of the cathedral, which later transformed into a monastery with an educational institution.
