Achi Monastery

Achi Monastery is a medieval Orthodox building in Guria featuring a single-nave design constructed from stone. The structure contains interior walls decorated with religious artwork from past centuries.

The monastery was founded in the 8th century and became an important religious center. By the 17th century, it received significant patronage from Princes Simon I Gurieli and Kaikhosro I Gurieli, which strengthened its role.

The interior walls hold frescoes from the 13th century depicting scenes of Saint George's life with Greek inscriptions. These painted works by Onesimos create a visual record of religious devotion that visitors can still observe today.

The monastery sits about 9 kilometers south of Ozurgeti in a rural setting. It remains accessible to visitors and continues to serve religious purposes, so respectful behavior is appropriate.

A gilded silver cross inscribed with Queen Tamar's name returned to the monastery in 2015 after being protected for decades by the Salukvadze family. The artifact survived the Soviet era hidden from authorities and represents the resilience of religious devotion.
