Kobuleti Strict Nature Reserve, Protected wetland ecosystem in Kobuleti Municipality, Adjara, Georgia.
Kobuleti Strict Nature Reserve is a protected wetland in Adjara with peat bog formations and water channels running through it. The site is bounded by the Togoni river, the Kobuleti-Ozurgeti highway, and the Shavi Ghele river, featuring unusual peat formations rising up to 13 feet (4 meters) in height.
The reserve was established in 1998 and gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2021 as part of the Colchic Rainforests and Wetlands site. This recognition reflects the global importance of protecting this ecosystem and the ancient plant species within it.
The reserve is home to rare plants that have survived since the Ice Age, showing how life adapts to extreme conditions. Visitors can see firsthand why this place matters to researchers and local understanding of nature.
Specialized marsh skis can be rented to walk on the soft peat surface, and binoculars are available for bird watching. Visit during drier periods when conditions are safer, and stay on marked paths to protect the delicate environment.
The area is home to carnivorous Drosera plants that trap small insects to survive in the nutrient-poor peat soil. These bog plants show remarkable adaptation to one of Georgia's harshest ecosystems.
