Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation Museum, Athens, Modern art museum in Pangrati district, Athens, Greece
The Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation Museum is a modern art museum housed in an eleven-story building with five dedicated exhibition floors in Pangrati. The structure merges a preserved mid-20th-century building with contemporary architectural additions.
The museum opened in October 2019, emerging from a collection assembled over decades by shipping magnate Basil Goulandris and his wife Elise. Their private holdings were eventually made accessible to the public.
The collection brings together works by major Western artists alongside contemporary Greek creators under one roof. Visitors encounter both classic masterpieces and regional artistic voices displayed together.
The building contains a restaurant, gift shop, and library for those wanting to explore further. The multiple floors accommodate visitors ranging from casual browsers to dedicated art enthusiasts.
The museum houses Van Gogh's Olive Picking from 1889, painted during his time at a facility in France. This work represents a key moment in the artist's creative journey.
