Byzantine and Christian Museum, History museum on Vassilissis Sofias Avenue, Athens, Greece
The Byzantine and Christian Museum is a history museum in Athens housing over 25,000 objects spanning from early Christian times through the medieval period. Its collection includes paintings, sacred texts, frescoes, pottery, textiles, manuscripts, and religious artworks displayed across multiple galleries.
The museum was founded in 1914 and opened to the public in 1924 after being relocated from the Athens Academy to Villa Ilissia. The mansion itself dates to 1848 and was originally built as a private residence for a European duchess.
The collection displays how people expressed their faith through everyday objects and religious art. Marble relief panels, small sculptures, and painted pottery tell stories about customs and beliefs that changed as Greek society shifted from ancient times to the Byzantine era.
The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00 and is within walking distance of Evangelismos metro station. Plan to spend at least two to three hours here to see the different galleries and exhibitions at a comfortable pace.
The museum operates a specialized library dedicated to Byzantine research and scholarship. This scholarly collection makes the building a place where visitors can engage deeply with the history behind the objects on display.
