War Museum, Military museum in Central Athens, Greece
The War Museum is a military museum in central Athens housed in a modern building with four exhibition levels showing weapons, uniforms, medals, and documents. The collection covers Greek military history from the Bronze Age through to the 20th century.
The Greek government founded the museum in 1964, and it officially opened on July 18, 1975 after years of preparation. It was created to bring together military objects and records that had been scattered across different institutions and private hands.
The War Museum takes its name directly from its purpose, and visitors today can see how Greek soldiers dressed, equipped themselves, and fought across very different eras. Walking through the rooms, you notice how each period left its own marks on weapons and gear, from hand-forged blades to modern firearms.
The museum is located in central Athens close to Syntagma Square, making it easy to reach on foot from other city landmarks. Allow enough time to go through all four levels without rushing.
The museum runs branches in 7 other Greek cities, one of which is the residence museum of General Napoleon Zervas, a figure known for his role in the resistance during World War II. This branch gives visitors a rare look at the personal space of a military leader rather than just his battlefield record.
