Modruš

Modruš is a small settlement in the municipality of Josipdol in Karlovac County, situated at around 400 meters elevation. The village spreads across hilly terrain and is home to a small population that maintains a quiet rural way of life.

The area came under the influence of the Frankopan family in the 12th century, who established strategic control over the region. This rule turned the location into an important hub for regional trade and connections between different territories.

The settlement holds deep connections to traditional Croatian family names such as Gašparović, Jandrlić, Keser, and Antončić that have remained rooted here for generations. These names tell the story of people who shaped this small community over time.

The settlement is accessible via the Zagreb-Split route, where infrastructure projects have shaped the region over time. Visitors should expect simple rural conditions and should be prepared to explore the area independently.

Beneath the present village lie remains of two ancient Illyrian Japod strongholds from the Bronze Age, representing the earliest known settlements at this location. These archaeological layers show the region was inhabited long before medieval times arrived.
