Frankopan Castle, Medieval stone castle in Ogulin, Croatia
Frankopan Castle is a stone fortress perched on a limestone cliff above the Dobra River, featuring square towers and thick stone walls with Renaissance design elements. The structure was built to command views of the valley below and control passage through the region.
The Frankopan noble family built this fortress around 1500 as part of their network of castles across Croatian lands. The structure served as a key defensive position for the region over subsequent centuries.
The castle houses a regional museum with collections of traditional weapons, furniture, and documents from the Ogulin area. Visitors can explore how local people lived and worked through the displayed objects and everyday items.
The site is open to visitors daily from 10 AM to 6 PM, with guided tours available in Croatian and English. Wear comfortable shoes, as the path up to the cliff is steep and the walkways inside the castle are uneven.
The castle contains a deep pit called Devil's Court that inspired local author Ivana Brlic Mazuranic to write Croatian fairy tales. This hidden cave and its stories remain part of the area's cultural identity.
