Nečven

Nečven, Medieval castle ruin in Puljane, Croatia

Nečven is a stone fortress ruin perched on a cliff at about 226 meters elevation, commanding views across the valley below. From this vantage point, it overlooks the Krka River and the surrounding landscape of the Promina region.

The Nelipić family built this fortress in the early 15th century as a defensive stronghold. It changed hands several times over the following centuries, passing to other rulers who adapted it to their needs.

The ruins reflect the overlapping influences of different powers who controlled this region over time, visible in how the structure was built. Visitors can sense how its position above the river made it a place of strategic importance.

The ruins can be explored year-round, with access available from the nearby village of Puljane. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the terrain is uneven and paths can be steep in places.

A wooden drawbridge once spanned the gorge between this castle and Trošenj Castle across the way. This engineering solution allowed the two fortresses to work together controlling trade passing through the region.
