Burnum, Roman archaeological site in Kistanje, Croatia
Burnum is a Roman military camp in Kistanje that features building foundations, two surviving arches, and a military amphitheatre within Krka National Park. The commander's residence and several living quarters are partially excavated and show how the ancient camp was organized.
This military camp was founded around 33 BC and served as a base for several legions, including the Legio XX Valeria Victrix during regional uprisings. The site was an important outpost of the Roman Empire along the Danube frontier.
The Burnum Archaeological Collection displays weapons, tools, and daily items across seven thematic exhibition rooms at the Krka Eco Campus near Puljane. You can see here how Roman soldiers lived and worked.
The site is open year-round and group visits require advance booking through info@npk.hr for a better visit experience. Guided tours are available to help you understand the excavations and the layout of the ancient camp.
An underground aqueduct called Plavno Polje carried water over long distances and supplied cool water to the camp year-round. This engineering achievement shows how skilled Roman builders were at supporting frontier outposts.
