Biskupija

Biskupija is a settlement situated on the Kosovo field between the Promina and Veliki Kozjak mountains in Šibenik-Knin County. The area spreads across relatively flat terrain with the mountain ranges forming a natural boundary.

Five medieval churches with foundations dating from the 9th to 11th centuries were discovered here through archaeological excavation. These findings show that this place held importance in early Croatian history.

The memorial church here features works by sculptor Ivan Meštrović and displays a fresco of religious significance. Visitors can see how local artistic traditions are woven into the building's design and decoration.

The settlement sits roughly 5 kilometers southeast of Knin and is accessible by car. The flat terrain allows for easy movement, and the archaeological site is open to view in daylight.

Excavations uncovered one of the earliest known representations of the Virgin Mary in Croatian art at this location. This artwork was found within one of the medieval church structures, revealing the artistic development of the region.
