Avas, Hilltop in Miskolc, Hungary.
Avas is a hill on the edge of Miskolc, Hungary, where residential streets, woodland, and a television tower at the top sit side by side. The slopes are crossed by narrow, winding roads, and sandstone rock formations appear at several points across the terrain.
The hill was already settled in the Stone Age, as finds from the Szeleta culture show. A Gothic Protestant church was built on its northern slope in the 16th century and is considered the oldest surviving building in Miskolc.
The name Avas comes from a Slavic word meaning bird, which hints at the many species that live in the wooded parts of the hill. Walkers moving through the quieter, tree-covered sections often spot them without looking very hard.
The hill can be explored on foot along several marked paths that suit different levels of fitness. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, especially on the steeper stretches and the narrow, uneven roads on the slopes.
The limestone caves carved into the hill's rock were once used by prehistoric people and were later converted into wine cellars, some of which are still in use. Their entrances can be spotted along the slopes during a walk through the area.
