The settlement received the right to hold markets from King Louis I in 1365 and grew in trade. During Ottoman times in the 16th century it became an important center for wine production.
The name comes from the Slavic word for bear cave and points to early settlement in the region. Today residents use the spacious Népkert Park for walks and outdoor events.
