Szent István Cave, Show cave in Lillafüred, Hungary

Szent István Cave extends through 1,350 meters of limestone passages with a vertical rise of 94 meters in the Bükk mountains of northeast Hungary.

The cave remained undiscovered until 1900 when a dog fell into a pit, leading to its initial name 'Dog's Cave' before scientific exploration began in 1913.

The cave received its current name in honor of Saint Stephen, the first King of Hungary, reflecting the national reverence for this historical figure.

The cave maintains guided tours covering 460 meters of paths with incandescent lighting and operates daily from April through October between 9 AM and 5 PM.

The cave system houses a rare blind cave bug species, Duvalius gebhardti, measuring between 3.5 and 4.1 millimeters in length.
