High-rise, Miskolc

The high-rise in Miskolc is a concrete residential tower standing 70 meters tall with 18 floors above ground and one below. Its structure contains multiple apartments on each level, served by elevators and equipped with central heating systems.

Built in 1968, this structure emerged from Hungary's major urban housing program to meet growing population needs. The construction represented the country's response to housing shortages during that period.

Known locally as Húszemeletes, the building reflects how standardized housing was created across Eastern Europe during the 1960s. Its presence shapes how residents and visitors perceive the city's character today.

The building serves as residential apartments and is not open to public visitors, though it remains clearly visible throughout the city. You can observe its silhouette from various points in Miskolc's downtown area.

The structure was built without traditional foundations, instead resting on a single large concrete raft that floats on the subsoil. This innovative approach solved groundwater challenges at the construction site.
