Synagogue of Miskolc, Orthodox synagogue in Kazinczy Street, Miskolc, Hungary.
The Synagogue of Miskolc is a house of worship on Kazinczy Street with a three-aisle structure combining Byzantine and Gothic elements within Romanesque Revival architecture. The building features pointed Gothic windows and a distinctive rose window in its facade.
Architect Ludwig Förster designed this structure, completed in 1863 with modern elements that sparked disagreement within the Orthodox Jewish community. It has functioned as a prayer house since its opening.
The prayer hall contains memorial tablets at the Déryné Street entrance honoring members of the local Jewish community who died during World War II. These plaques serve as a visible reminder of the community's wartime losses.
This remains the only functioning Jewish house of worship in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, serving roughly 500 members of the local community. Visitors should be aware that this is an active place of religious practice.
The interior walls display geometric patterns in Moorish style, while slender iron pillars support the women's section overlooking the main prayer hall. These details blend oriental design traditions with practical structural solutions.
