Gothic Protestant Church of Avas

The Gothic Protestant Church of Avas stands as the oldest structure in central Miskolc, featuring traditional Gothic architectural elements and a prominent belfry.

Founded in 1201, the church underwent reconstruction after the Turkish invasion of 1544, requiring over twenty years to complete due to restrictions on wood supplies.

The Westminster Chimes from the church bells ring every fifteen minutes, and the National Theatre of Miskolc incorporates these sounds into their performances.

The church accommodates 400 people during services and maintains a cemetery where numerous important local figures rest, including politicians and artists.

The Angster organ, installed in 1895, contributes to the superior acoustics of the church interior, making it suitable for regular concert performances.
