Gothic Protestant Church of Avas

The Gothic Protestant Church of Avas is the oldest building standing in central Miskolc and displays characteristic Gothic features including pointed arches and a prominent bell tower. The interior provides seating for about 400 worshippers and the adjacent cemetery holds graves of various local figures and artists.

The church was founded in 1201 and represents one of the city's earliest religious structures. Following the Turkish invasion of 1544, it required extensive rebuilding, with material shortages prolonging the reconstruction work significantly.

The Westminster Chimes from the belfry mark the passing hours and have become woven into the daily rhythm of the neighborhood. These sounds create a connection between the sacred building and the life of people walking the surrounding streets.

The church sits in the pedestrian zone of the city center and is easy to locate with clear signage from the main square. The adjacent cemetery is open during daylight hours and offers pathways for walking among the graves.

The interior features the Angster organ from 1895, which creates warm and resonant tones throughout the space. This exceptional acoustic quality has made it a regular venue for concert performances.
