The Pauline monastery of Szentlélek is a medieval monastery ruin set in the Bükk Mountains near Miskolc, Hungary. The stone walls still standing show Gothic details, and the ground plan of the complex, with its church and living quarters, remains readable on site.
The monastery was founded in the mid-13th century, shortly after the Pauline order took root in Hungary. It was destroyed during the 16th-century conflicts that swept through the region and was never rebuilt.
The name Szentlélek means "Holy Spirit" in Hungarian, and it hints at the spiritual purpose this place once had. Today visitors who reach the site often pause quietly among the stone walls, drawn more by the forest setting than by any organised religious activity.
The ruins are only reachable on foot through forested mountain terrain, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. The path can be slippery after rain, and it is worth allowing plenty of time for the return walk as well.
Excavations in 1974 uncovered everyday objects belonging to the monks, including pottery fragments and tools, buried under the rubble. These finds offer a rare glimpse into the daily routine of a remote medieval community that written sources alone could not provide.
