Bivak Cave

Bivak Cave is a natural cave in Esztergom with an entrance about 7 meters wide and 3 meters high. It is located in a hilly area within Duna-Ipoly National Park and is lit by natural light in its main chamber.

The cave was first systematically explored in 1953 through archaeological excavations that uncovered ancient animal bones and signs of human activity. These discoveries show that the site was inhabited in prehistoric times.

The cave served as a shelter for local people over many generations, as shown by fire pits and marks on the walls. These traces indicate that humans regularly used and stayed in this place.

Reaching the cave requires climbing rocky terrain, so sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness are necessary. The best time to visit is during dry weather to ensure safe movement on the rocks.

The cave has a natural chimney shaft that draws smoke outside, which allowed early inhabitants to use fires safely inside. This feature shows how cleverly early people adapted the space.
