Waterford Airport, airport in Ireland
Waterford Airport is a regional airport in Drumcannon, southeast of Waterford city, with a small terminal building and limited flight operations. The terminal contains check-in desks, departure gates, a café, an information desk, and free wireless internet access.
The airport opened in 1981 as a small facility for light aircraft and received a new terminal building in the early 1990s. The runway was extended over time to allow larger aircraft and more destinations to be served.
The airport is known locally as Waterford Regional Airport and acts as a practical gateway for people traveling from the southeast of Ireland. Its small scale reflects how the region uses air travel for direct connections rather than large-scale tourism.
The airport is easy to reach by car, with parking available directly in front of the terminal. Taxis meet arriving passengers, and the terminal is accessible for people with mobility needs.
In 1999, a rescue helicopter crashed near Tramore, close to the airport, and four crew members lost their lives. Plans are now underway to extend the runway to accommodate larger aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and restore commercial flights.
