Watch Tower, Medieval defensive tower in Waterford, Ireland
The Watch Tower is a cylindrical stone structure on Manor Street equipped with arrow slits and gun loops built into its walls. The construction displays typical features of medieval fortification architecture with details designed for defensive purposes.
The tower was built in the 13th century as part of Waterford's city walls and later modified in the 15th century to accommodate artillery. These changes show how defensive technology evolved during the medieval period.
The tower was part of the medieval city's defense network and still shows traces of its original purpose today. Visitors can observe how the architecture was adapted to changing military tactics.
The tower is accessible from the rear with two entrances at different heights that allow visitors to explore various levels. Sturdy footwear is recommended for safely navigating the narrow stairs and walking along the walls.
The western side of the tower marks the former position of a city gate that was demolished in the 18th century to create access to a neighboring estate. This demolition was part of urban redesign that altered the original fortification line.
