Saint Patricks Church, Catholic church in Waterford, Ireland

St Patrick's Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic parish church on Jenkin's Lane in Waterford, built in 1764. Its exterior has cement-rendered walls and artificial slates from the 1990 restoration, but the round-headed main door sits in a portico with fluted pilasters, a pediment and moulded archivolt, dated 1840. Inside, a balustraded gallery runs along three sides on a five-bay colonnade of fluted Doric columns, and the chancel has a neo-classical reredos with fluted pilasters and a broken pediment.

Mass was recorded on this site in 1704, when Catholics in Waterford still worshipped in tolerated chapels. The present church was built in 1764 and extended with a chancel around 1840 and a sacristy in 1890. Edmund Ignatius Rice prayed here around 1790 with the young men known as the Waterford group, when the building was called the Little Chapel. It was re-roofed in 1990 and reopened in September 2019 after renovation.

The church is still an active Roman Catholic parish church on Jenkin's Lane. In the 1790s Edmund Ignatius Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers, prayed here with other young men in what was then called the "Little Chapel"; the "Big Chapel" later became the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity. The name Patrick refers to Ireland's patron saint.

St Patrick's stands on Jenkin's Lane, a narrow street in Waterford city centre, so it is reached on foot rather than by car. The church was closed for renovation, including a new access path, in 2019 and reopened that September, so the entrance route is recent. Check locally before travelling, as opening depends on parish use.
